On July 18th, our AYLUS Chapel Hill branch of high school volunteers helped at Wildflower Lane Farm. The farm collaborates with PORCH to provide food for those in need and to reduce the impact of food insecurity. Our aim in AYLUS was to assist in the harvesting process. We got to work at 8 in the morning and ended at 11 am. We helped remove weeds that would be detrimental to the growth and yields of the crop, even in the bright sunny hours. We mainly removed the weeds, which had grown excessively and were overtaking the sunlight and resources, on the pepper row. We knew that the success of the harvest was significantly more important than our momentary struggle. So, we continued working. In addition, we also picked cherry tomatoes. By doing these tasks, we ensured that the crops would thrive and ultimately lead to feeding many people in need.
Volunteers who participated in this event are Michelle Lan (3 hrs), Karen Lin (3 hrs), Kayla Lin (3 hrs) and Kasi Lin (3 hrs).
