On 7/16/23, members of AYLUS Syosset volunteered at the Brentwood LINPI (Long Island Native Plants Initiative) Greenhouse, transplanting native plants such as purple lovegrass, mountain mint, yarrow and partridge pea plants. Native plants are important because they preserve biodiversity, stabilize soil, filter water, purify air and support wildlife. Not only that but foreign plants may become invasive and harm the environment.
The Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) is an all-volunteer cooperative effort of over 30 non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, nursery professionals, and citizens. Their mission is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local) plant materials for use in nurseries, landscaping, and habitat restoration activities.
