“Everyone can be great because everyone can serve.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

In the U.S. today, there are more than 18.1 million people living with and beyond cancer – and nearly 44 million people worldwide who have been diagnosed with cancer within the past 5 years.

“Cancer survivors face ongoing, often long-lasting, hardships because of their disease – physical and emotional side effects, increased risk for second primary cancers and other health problems, and potentially devastating financial setbacks, to name a few,” says National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation spokesperson Laura Shipp. Every year on National Cancer Survivors Day, countless people in hundreds of communities around the world come together to acknowledge and support cancer survivors.

Canyon Crest Academy Be the Cure Club is a student-run club aiming to support chronic disease patients through fundraising and handmade-item donations, such as hats, scarves, and encouraging cards. The club cooperates with AYLUS to help more people in the community.

In hope to raise awareness of the ongoing challenges cancer survivors face as well as to celebrate their lives, Canyon Crest Academy Be the Cure Club, partnering with AYLUS, organized craft tables at Sharp Memorial Hospital (12 volunteers) and Sharp Grossmont Hospital (2 volunteers) for their Cancer Survivors Day event. During the event, AYLUS volunteers helped patients make personalized beanie hats and bracelets with encouraging messages on them.

The following members participated in the event on 6/3/2023 and with 4 volunteer hours for each:

Angela Li, Lauren Kan, Angie Hu, Liuqing Chen, Emily Zhu, Emmy Zhu, Serena Liu , Jason Fang, Aliya Tang, Max Yang, Oliver Ren, Zhiyin Xu, Lily Ji and Kevin Ho.
