On June 20, 2023, the AYLUS Chapel Hill Branch volunteered at the “Wildflower Lane Farm,” assisting with harvesting and packaging vegetables to be sent to PORCH, which distributes the harvested vegetables to people in need in the community. As always, the farm owner Jim was kind in instructing us to harvest and package the vegetables. Overall, we have prepared 190 bags of chard as requested, in addition to 24 bags of chard and 26 bags of collards. Initially, we learned to select and harvest the vegetables in the best conditions and leave the sprouts at a younger age for future harvests. After harvesting sufficient chard to be packaged, we wasted little time transitioning to learning to weigh the vegetables to 0.5 pounds and package them. As we gained more experience, we developed more efficient methods of completing the task collaboratively and operated at the maximum efficiency in packaging the vegetables, and therefore we finished quickly with even extra units. The volunteer experience was both enjoyable and insightful for us volunteers, and in the future, we shall continue to serve the community, with hopes of improving the conditions and promoting positive changes within.
