AYLUS Syosset Participates in a March Fighting Against Gun Violence, 6/24/23
Members of AYLUS Syosset participated in a fight against gun violence alongside the Long Island branch of the organization March For Our Lives, Moms Demand Action, the League of Women Voters and AYLUS Dix Hills in front of the Nassau County Legislature building in Mineola. Members gathered to make signs that detailed quotes and statistics about gun-related tragedies, namely mass and school shootings in America. Prior to the event, members made and printed AYLUS brochures and posters which were then handed out to participants during the march. Many organizations and leaders gave speeches about the importance of spreading awareness about the impact that gun violence has on all communities, especially kids and minorities. Members shared similar sentiments with each other and the other participants about the need to take action to ensure that the community around us remains safe. Sally Jamieson, Trien Song and Dahlia Solomon from the March for Our Lives group gave a speech alongside their group co-sponsor, member of Nassau County Legislature Josh Lafazan. Additionally, pediatrician Dr. Eve Meltzer Krief talks about how difficult it is to hear about the realities of school shootings and how guns have become the number one cause of death for children.
AYLUS Syosset hopes to be able to gain a better understanding of the issues relevant to our community and our country as a whole. Even though it is difficult for rallies to make significant changes to the county legislature, it is still important that groups like us make the effort to stand up for these issues.
