The Long Island Chinese School and the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch collaborate to give kids the best possible education. As teacher assistants, the AYLUS Dix Hills volunteers assisted teachers to help students to learn the lesson. Since today was Mother’s Day, students learned vocabulary related to the holiday, and wrote Chinese characters on the board collaboratively. Volunteers also assisted teachers in photocopying pages of work for exams and delivered these papers to numerous teachers, as finals are coming up.
Later in the day, volunteers assisted in culture classes, managing different interactive activities for younger students, or helped to proctor the HSK. The HSK(Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is a Chinese proficiency test that assesses the Chinese skill sets of non native Chinese. It includes writing/reading and listening/speaking prompts. Volunteers proctored students taking these exams by playing audio for the speaking part, and monitored the students to prevent cheating and make sure everyone knew what they were doing.
