Syosset Helps Children with Earth Day activies at Sunken Meadow State Park’s Earth Day Drop-in, 4/23/23

Members of the Syosset branch went to Sunken Meadow State Park and volunteered at the Nature Center. Members helped out at the Earth Day drop-in and aided children in fun activities. Tanner taught members how to make bird feeders by coating pinecones with shortening and covering it with a blend of bird seeds ranging from sunflower seeds, millet, and milo. Tanner also taught members how to make potted plants with newspapers, tape, and toilet paper rolls. Children were able to plant all types of flowers such as sunflowers and wildflowers and were able to take them home. 

 

Furthermore, children also had a lot of fun learning about the different animals living at the nature center, such as Bubbles, their rescued Diamondback Terrapin turtle. Children had fun learning about and feeding the turtle. They also participated in other fun activities around the Nature Center such as looking at the exhibitions talking about different species of bird and fish such as the piping plovers, an endangered species of shorebirds.
