This Saturday, from 12:30pm to 4:00pm, volunteers from the Great Neck Branch participated in the Relay of Love community care fest for Alzheimer’s prevention day. Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, with symptoms severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, with the majority of people with Alzheimer’s being 65 and older. If it affects a person under 65, it is considered to be younger-onset or early-onset Alzheimer’s, with people being in the early, middle, or late stages of the disease.
The Relay of Love foundation hosted today’s event, with two different groups: one helping elderly persons and the other sending toys to underprivileged children. Our activity for the day was helping elderly persons by sending a positioning necklace to each of them and connecting it with their guardian or relative’s mobile phone Bluetooth, so that the real-time location of the elderly can be found. This helps all the families prevent the elderly persons from getting lost and allows them to live together more safely without suffering from the loss of the elderly. We also taught them how to connect the Bluetooth with the necklace, put on the necklace for them, and helped them to sign the form.
I think today’s event was very meaningful, as we helped hundreds of elderly persons and reduced the probability of them getting lost. We were all very happy to have contributed to this cause.
