On April 2, 2023, AYLUS Oyster Bay collaborated with the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, an esteemed non-profit organization dedicated to protecting birds. The focus of their joint efforts was to address the growing issue of beachgoers approaching and disturbing birds at Stehli Beach, creating a safer and more conducive nesting environment for Piping Plover and Tern birds.
Stehli Beach had been facing challenges with human interference that disrupted the nesting habits of these delicate bird species. In response, AYLUS members stepped forward with a solution: they diligently constructed a string fence around a designated section of the beach. This barrier offered the Piping Plover and Tern birds a secure and undisturbed space to nest and raise their young.
To raise awareness and discourage potential disruptions, AYLUS volunteers placed informative signs on the fence, notifying visitors of the importance of respecting the nesting area. The signs clearly stated the potential consequences, including possible arrest and fines, for disturbing the nesting birds. This proactive approach aimed to educate beachgoers and foster a culture of responsibility and respect towards the natural habitats of these vulnerable avian species.
Through their dedicated efforts, AYLUS- Oyster Bay members created a transformative impact, effectively mitigating the disturbances caused by human activities on the beach. By providing a safe sanctuary for the birds to nest and rear their young, the volunteers ensured that the Piping Plover and Tern birds could thrive without unnecessary stress or interference.
The success of AYLUS Oyster Bay’s conservation project at Stehli Beach ultimately contributes to the health and happiness of the bird populations in the area. By safeguarding their nesting grounds, AYLUS members have played a crucial role in supporting the preservation of these precious bird species.
As stewards of the environment and advocates for wildlife protection, AYLUS Oyster Bay sets an inspiring example for the community. Their efforts exemplify the impact of collective action in creating a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
In working with the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, AYLUS Oyster Bay embodies the spirit of dedication and responsibility towards protecting our natural world. Their efforts at Stehli Beach have not only created a safer environment for the birds but also nurtured a deeper sense of environmental stewardship, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.
