Members of AYLUS Syosset worked together to clean the trails of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Members walked alongside the shores, docks, large rock formations, small ponds and into areas that usually see large groups and gatherings in order to remove as much waste as possible. Common items found included plastic and glass bottles, bottle caps, metal cans, fast food and take out containers, napkins and food wrappers.
Though it is a simple yet tedious process to collect trash that people have left behind, it is an important responsibility for AYLUS to be advocates of maintaining clean parks. Millions of marine and terrestrial organisms are exposed to plastics and can suffocate, experience impaction and starve from the ingestion of excessive plastic. Not only does plastic itself have severe effects on wildlife, but when exposed to water for long periods the oceans can have fluctuations of harmful chemicals that seep out of the plastic.
Thus it is extremely important to be more environmentally conscious about where we dispose of our waste and when possible, clean up after ourselves and each other.
