The problem of hunger does exist in our community, and more than 10 percent of orange county residents face food insecurity. PORCH (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill-Carrboro Homes) is a local hunger relief organization that collects and distributes donated foods to local residents and families which are in need. On March 12th, members of the AYLUS Chapel Hill Branch joined the efforts of fighting hunger through the Foods For Family program established by PORCH. After the collection of donations delivered to extraordinary ventures at PORCH, we examined the expiration date of non-perishable foods and sorted them by type of foods. The wide variety of donated non-perishable foods included everything from boxes of cereal, bags of beans and rice, pasta and pasta sauce, cans of fruits/vegetables / hearty soups/stews/tuna/chicken, Mac & cheese, peanut butter, and jelly, to healthy snack foods such as granola bars, crackers, raisins. After we sorted the foods, volunteers of the next shift will pack these non-perishable foods in the Foods For Family bags. Through this process, we hope we could fill 120 Foods For Family bags with healthy and nutritious Foods. We are grateful to have this opportunity to engage and help to address hunger relief. We look forward to participating in these monthly food drives and making food accessible to more families in need in the future.
Volunteers who participated in this event are Karen Lin (2 hours) and Eric Sun (2.5 hours)
