January 8th, the AYLUS Dix Hills Branch worked as a teacher’s assistant, helping kids who were struggling to understand the lesson, making sure students were on task, watching the students during break times, passing out classwork, photocopying paper, and grading student’s work. During this time, one of the students was breezing by the class, becoming bored as they thought the lesson was progressing slowly. This led the students to begin drawing in their textbook. One of our volunteers understood and noticed that her behavior signified boredom and helped the student figure out a way to expand their knowledge of Chinese and have a greater depth of knowledge by joining words with other phrases to create new words. Our volunteers actions allowed students to pay more attention to the teacher and to better cement the fundamentals of their learning.
Later in the evening, volunteers aided the Chinese School Staff in their endeavor of recording videos for Chinese New Year, helping take photos and videos as well as putting up and removing the decoration and backdrop.
Volunteers: Ru Xue Jiang (4 hours), Bryan Fan (3 hours and 30 minutes), Ming Chen (3 hours and 30 minutes), and Nayaab Afzal (3 hours).
