AYLUS Roslyn Assisted in New York State Park Cleanup (6th) on December 17, 2022

On Saturday from 9:30am -12:40pm, the Roslyn Branch volunteered at Bayard Cutting
Arboretum.

We worked on the Friendship Garden which was built in the 70’s and was
dedicated to the native people. We work to remove the onion grass and the mustard
grass which was an invasive species that was taking over the garden. The onion grass
was easy to spot given how it was taller and thicker than the grass around it, it grew in
clumps and when you pulled it out of the ground it resembled onions and had a rather
pleasant smell. The mustard grass grass however was harder to find because it was
lower to the ground. It had a large leaf and was easy to pull. It didn’t have the smell of
mustard and there were many of them.

Due to the fact that there was a storm the prior day that flooded the land there
were puddles and the ground was wet, and everywhere we stepped there was a slosh of
water and mud and some of our socks got wet. But in the end as we worked together
we managed to pull many of those plants out of the ground and saved the garden.

Members who participated included:
Natalie Tsui (3 hours), Zixi Xia (3 hours), Zihan Wang (3 hours), Ryan Lin (3 hours), and Ethan
Lin (3 hours).
