On December 3, 2022, Murrieta AYLUS members lended a hand to the A Brush with Kindness project for Senior Home Yard Work.
Arriving at the project site, they quickly realized they wouldn’t be painting, but instead doing yard work on the residence. Trees and bushes had been pre-cut carefully, and most of the work consisted of moving the cut branches away to be picked up by trucks later. The branches were prickly and large, thus everyone was careful not to hurt anyone else, though an occasional poke into one’s legs while moving large branches were quite commonplace. One of the trees cut was a lemon tree, leading to many fruit related puns and everyone carefully picking the fruit off the cut branches. After all branches were moved, everyone took a break and spoke to many of the other volunteers on site. Then, they got to work in the yard again. The dried leaves were gathered into trash bags and moved, which was quite challenging as everyone was insistent on packing the leaves as tight as possible to minimize bag usage. The bags were dense and heavy, and they were forced to team up on each bag to move it, even still with great difficulty. After the leaves were cleared, next was the grass. The grass was uprooted with rakes and similarly bagged, alongside many twigs. After the backyard was completely cleared, everyone put away their tools, before exhaustedly wiping their hands and grabbing a final drink.
