On Saturday, August 20, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, the Roslyn Branch of AYLUS volunteered at the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI) greenhouse.
We mixed potting soil, added different fertilizers, and hosed it to provide the necessary moisture. Filling trays and pots with the soil, we potted up seedlings into larger containers to better their development and growth. Some of the plants were extremely limp, so filling the pot to the rim with soil was critical not only because it is covering its roots but also in straightening the plants so they could receive more insolation. There are types of plants that have tightly interwoven roots due to being grown in the same tray. Separating the delicate structures without tearing is an uphill battle that we managed to pull through.
