The AYLUS Bellaire Branch volunteered at the Houston Food Bank on Sunday, July 3, 2022.
The Houston Food Bank is America’s largest food bank. The food bank aims to distribute fresh produce, non-perishable foods, and meals to those in need in the Houston area.
From 9 AM to 12 PM, volunteers worked with sorting citruses. During the three hours of volunteering, volunteers prepared mesh bags and kept count of filled bags. Volunteers sorted the undamaged oranges into bags, which weighed five pounds each. They discarded the oranges that were rotten, moldy, and damaged. Volunteers packed 350 bags and 1750 pounds of oranges. By doing this, they also helped provide 1458 meals.
