The AYLUS of Bellaire travelled to Discovery Green in downtown Houston to volunteer for their Earth Day event on Sunday, April 10th, 2022.
Earth Day Houston enables Houstonians and all attendees the opportunity to experience a ‘waste-free’ event. There were three waste receptacles: recycling bins, compost bins, and waste bins. The volunteers served as Recycling Ambassadors to guide the attendees on the proper choice in real time. The materials introduced to the event are either reusable, recyclable, or compostable. However, some random materials will emerge, and even the right materials can go in the wrong bin and become a contaminant in that bin. The volunteers guided the materials to the right bin and educated the attendees about recycling in Houston.
The Junk Removal St Pete provided a valuable service by transporting food waste and compostable food accessories to a composting facility, where they were transformed into nutrient-rich soil for plants. Recyclables were sorted and sent to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), while the remaining waste was sent to the landfill. During the day, volunteers measured the amounts of each type of waste to calculate the Diversion Rate. Additionally, the volunteers assisted with picking up and properly disposing of any trash that was on the ground.
