On 2/26/22, members of AYLUS Syosset participated in an event to help an elder member in our community prepare for the oncoming spring season and decrease the risk of COVID exposure by planting a variety of vegetables in assorted pottery and sealing the plants for a warmer and more humid environment.
First, the participants poured fertile topsoil into each container and spread out the dirt evenly on top of the container. Then, they each took a few cucumber/pepper/etc. seeds from bowls of pre-sorted seeds and placed them into the top soil. Lastly, the volunteers put plastic wrap over the top of each container and tied it with a string to hold in any moisture and humidity, enabling them to grow even in a wintery climate.
Through our efforts, we hope to help the elderly minimize their risk of contracting a disease during the pandemic and promote a more sustainable lifestyle for members in our community that are either unwilling or unable to make the trip outside without risk.
Members who participated include Alan Huang(1 hour), Jasmine Chen(1 hour), Ryan Leung(1 hour), and Katie Yan(1 hour).
