AYLUS Syosset Celebrates New Year with Planning and Performing at Times Square 2022 Ball Drop Opening Show
On January 16, 2022, 14 members of AYLUS-Syosset branch celebrated the arrival of new year with a review of year 2021 and an audacious plan for year 2022.
As we look back on another year upended by the pandemic, AYLUS-Syosset branch is pleased to note that we persevered with impressive spirit. We were nominated as the Branch of Month EIGHT times in 2021, and six members received Presidential Volunteer Service Award medals from the President. AYLUS-Syosset also received multiple citations from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Legislator Joshua Lafazan for contributing to the community. Here is a short summary of what we have accomplished in 2021.
Whole-Year Events
- Set up 12 composting stations throughout the NY/LI area to combat food waste, with generous donations of $1000 from three members and their families.
- Offered 50 online group sessions of English tutoring to new immigrant students.
- Offered 50 online group sessions of Classic Chinese literature appreciate to students.
- Organized a dozen cultural events featuring Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese traditions and environmental protection events.
May
- Organized a 400 attendee-strong rally “Love Unity Action” at the LIRR Syosset Station parking lot in celebration of AAPI month.
July
- Beach cleanup at Howard Beach
- Beach cleanup at Fairfax, Virginia
August
- Raised nearly $800 in school supplies and 6 bags of clothes for the Back-to-School Drive and donated to the Youth and Family Counseling Agency of Oyster Bay.
- Donated PPEs and self defense items to a senior center (Finest Adult Daycare Center) at Flushing
- Donated 10 bags of shoes for the National Drive of Soles-4-Souls at DSW.
- Received recognitions from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran
- Received citations from Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan
- Make promotional video for AYLUS-Syosset
September
- Organized a First Responder Appreciation event at the Syosset Fire Station on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
October
- Co-organized a First Responder Appreciation event at the Manhasset Fire Station.
November
- Co-organized a 5K run again Bullying at Eisenhower Park, with TEN volunteer members and registered runners raising $230 dollars cash, snacks and refreshments.
- Raised a total of $333.91 for the AYLUS Stand Up Against Bullying Award to Christine Lu.
December
- Co-organized a Walk for Youth Wellness.
- Celebrated the New Year at the Times Square Ball Drop 2022 Opening Show with Martial Arts performances (click here to watch our member Alan Huang perform the first solo).

In 2022, we will continue serving the community with three major foci: Environmental Protection, Civic Engagement, and Community Building. We will hold our monthly meetings on the following Sunday afternoons at 5pm (Feb. 13, Mar. 13, Apr. 10, May 15, and Jun. 5), and arrange most of our AYLUS events on Sunday afternoons. Members are highly motivated to plan more events, communicate more effectively, and report all events more promptly. We all hope to have more members to join us.
