On Nov. 18th, Christina Lu, a high school senior, was severely beaten on a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) train, as she stood up to bullies and tried to defend a group of younger Asian American students who were also on the train. Her family, in advocating for public safety, set up a Gofundme campaign. Many AYLUS-Columbus members and families have kindly donated toward this cause.
In addition, in response to this incident and Christina’s heroic action, National AYLUS, started an AYLUS Brave for Righteousness Scholarship fund for her. Columbus branch enthusiastically participated in this fundraising event, with 11 current members and families and 2 alumni members and families donating a total of $575. Branch members also wrote praising words for Christina Lu:
Carey Yi wrote: “Thanks for standing up to fight bully and racism. You are a hero and a model for all of us to follow. Hopefully you will recover quickly! Wish you a bright future.”
Kevin Wang wrote: “Thank you for standing up to fight for what’s right. You are a model for all of us to follow and your bravery is unmatched. Have a speedy recovery!”
Dustin He wrote: “Thank you for being a fighter. Thank you for being brave and standing behind what is right. Your great courage is admirable, and we wish you a speedy recovery.”
Catherine Harman wrote: “Thank you for being so brave and a hero for standing up against violent bullying. You have shown true courage and selflessness and are truly inspiring. Wishing you a speedy recovery!”
Brenna Li wrote: “We are so proud of you! It takes a special person to do what you did. You were brave to stand up for what’s right. Wish you a speedy recovery.”
National AYLUS will award the scholarship to Christina Lu and pass on the wishes from our members to her and her family.
