On 8/29/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (John Thach, Leo Cheng, and Aika Siuzu taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).
Leo Cheng finished Unit 7 and introduced students to other English learning tools. At first, students were given prompts to respond to on the topics they like such as YouTube. Then, the lesson was presented with a grammar focus focusing on Passive with prepositions. After running through the lesson, several English learning tools were introduced. One example is khan academy where students could practice their SAT and gamestolearnenglish.com which is a site that allows repetitive practice of English through various exercises.
Tutor John Thach taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, a new vocabulary list centered around destressing was introduced, where terms like “relaxation” and “meditation” were taught in anticipation for the upcoming school year. Various follow-up Questions were prompted, questions like: what are some ways you keep calm during a stressful situation? Following this, a short Jamboard activity was held, where question prompts were introduced, and students would write responses. These prompts probed the students to introspect on themselves a little with questions regarding each person’s personality, fashion sense, et cetera.
In ESL level tutoring 1, Aika Suizu began the class by beginning with an article about the changing economy. Students took turns reading the article while grasping an understanding of some of the difficult concepts and terms. Students created a discussion about how people contribute to the economy nowadays and how the economy, in turn, affects them. They then listed the pros and cons of spending a lot of money versus spending less money. They also created different real-life situations. In the end, several facts about the economy were presented. Afterward, students chose the correct word to create a logical sentence and answered questions relating to the article. Lastly, the tutor went over adverbs and adjectives while encouraging students to highlight them.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), and John Thach (1.5 hours).
