On 8/30/2021, AYLUS-Syosset initiated a collaboration with Long Island School of Chinese (LISOC) to promote literacy and diversity. LISOC is a school located at SUNY-Old Westbury with 400 students and families.
In the collaboration, Alan Huang, Jasmine Chen, Tommy Haotian Tang, and Jessica Albrecht of ALYUS Syosset and a member of ALYUS Manhasset joint held a story time with 5-graders on three stories from Monkey King through reading, analysis, and discussion.
The class was held in four breakout rooms, with two tutors working independently in each room to teach one to two students, The Ponddy Reader application was utilized as the educational tool through which tutors taught students. Each class and breakout room are targeted towards students’ skill levels and will go at a slower or faster pace to accommodate students’ needs. intensive learning, with non-stop reading, paraphrasing, discussion, and pronunciation correction, happened in all breakout rooms. The students enjoyed the challenges and the steep learning curve. Tutors also prepared short vocabulary word presentations and quick videos. The lesson breakout rooms lasted one hour and were followed by a short discussion.
The story of Monkey King (officially Journey to the West) is a classic story series in Chinese literature. Teaching this classic novel helped our students to embrace cultural diversity and literacy.
