On 8/22/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (John Thach, Leo Cheng, Ryan Leung, Aika Siuzu, Alan Huang and Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).
Tutors Aika Suizu and Leo Cheng taught the intermediate class. This class finished progress check units 5-6 and moved on to level 3, lesson 7. In the progress check, tutors went over speaking, listening, and discussion. First, students were encouraged to do speaking drills. Students chose situations and asked each other questions using different adjectives. Complete Sentences were made for comprehension. Students then analyzed different behaviors and judged them based on how acceptable they were. They compared their opinions and discussed whether or not certain behaviors were acceptable. Next, students were given roles of students A and B; they started with a conversation that involved the prices of a car with a verbal agreement. In school improvements, a discussion was made through group work among students about possible improvements in school. Lastly, tutors went over materials, waste, and recycling and informative facts/statistics about waste in the United States.
Student tutors John Thach and Jasmine Chen taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, a vocabulary list regarding relationships was reviewed and follow-up questions were asked regarding the list. Questions like, what makes a healthy relationship? Following this activity, a short Jamboard activity was held, where question prompts were introduced, and students would write responses. These questions mainly centered on the emerging school year.
In ESL Tutoring level 1, Ryan taught the students about the different types of holidays, seasons, and special occasions (like weddings, honeymoons, etc.). A short video about this topic was also watched and questions were answered afterwards. Students were then taught about relative clauses of time and how to make sentences with them ( i.e Mother’s Day is a day when, summer is a time when, etc.). Lastly, students read over a passage about New Year’s Eve and the traditions that different countries have around the world for this holiday.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), John Thach (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours), and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours).
