On 6/27/2021, members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Alan Huang, Aika Siuzu, and Emily Lin) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine). New tutor Mako Kobayashi observed the intermediate class to get a better understanding of the class.
Tutors Leo Cheng, Emily Lin, and Alan Huang finished Unit 3 of Book 3 and went on to the next unit. Collocations were introduced which is basically whether two words used together are right. There was lots of speaking and participation from our students as there were many activities that involved speaking. Overall, students learned more grammar and listed out what they learned in the class so far.
Aika started continuing Unit: 3 making chapters, where she began by introducing the class to apartment-themed vocabulary. The class recited the vocabulary while determining which factors were most important when renting an apartment. Students then divided adjectives into positive and negative sides. A 4-minute video about college dormitories and apartments was shown with questions introduced later for comprehension. In the video, three college students laid out the pros and cons of three different apartments, while discussing responsibilities/roles. The main focus of the class was to work on comprehension vs evaluation (evaluation being the judgment of one thing and comprehension being the judgment of two things against each other) using words like too, enough, and much. Lastly, students used wish + past tense to refer to present wishes.
Student tutor John Thach taught the advanced English proficiency course for AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL tutoring class. This class, a quick review for subject-verb agreement was performed. This was designed specifically to prepare for the language and grammar section of the SAT. Following the review, the students also went through an emotions themed vocabulary list, where they were prompted to read, pronounce, and define various terminology which appeared. These terms include words like “nostalgic” and “irritated.” Lastly, a jamboard was held where various questions were asked and students were encouraged to discuss their answers. These questions included “if you had more time in the day, what would you get down?,” among others.
The following students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours), Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), and Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
