On 5/30/2021, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Aika Siuzu, and Greene Xue) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
In class, there were 3 classes with 3 levels; Intro (Ryan, Greene and Aika), Intermediate (Alan, Leo and Emily), and Advanced (John, Jasmine).
Leo Cheng and Emily Lin went through Unit 2. The activities provided lots of practice for the students as the tutors corrected the mistakes the students made either in the speaking or writing section. Alan Huang was there to oversee and check what other classes were doing.
In the intro level class taught by Greene Xue, And Aika Siuzu students were taught a lesson about higher education and plans for the future. A new program, peardeck, was used to make the lesson more engaging, allowing students to draw, interact, and answer questions on slideshows. Students started off with a video about different types of careers such as lawyers, freelance reporters, and stand up comedy. Students read several passages that included hypothetical role plays and informational articles on what to do in a situation where you are late. Students also learned about how to describe changes using the present, past, and present perfect tenses, as well as the “verb+infinitive” sentence structure.
Student tutor John Thach taught the advanced class of AYLUS Syosset’s online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutor began a series of preview activities before the second half of the textbook. Students continued practicing their verbal English abilities through storytelling and storycrafting exercises in preparation for units to come.
The following 6 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours), Aika Siuzu (1.5 hours), and Greene Xue(1.5 hours) .
