Almost all of the in-person summer camps have been paused by COVID-19 pandemic , therefore, the demanding for online tutoring are growing massively. Especially for elementary students, their parents feel their kids’ education are negatively impacted by school closure due to the concerning of coronavirus. To help the community, some of AYLUS members volunteered to teach students ranging from the 2nd to 6th grade in general mathematics in Pearland. These teachers undertook many different responsibilities in order to successfully mentor students, including gathering curriculum, providing online learning classes, inspiring students to master math concepts, encouraging personal communications, grading homework, and more. In total, 7 volunteers, including Jayden Lu, Stephen Wang, Baron Niu, Stephen Mao, Andy Fu, Eric Qi, Edward Qi, taught 28 students with classes being conducted once a week, starting from July 1 – Aug 7, 2020. After receiving proper training, each volunteer was responsible for 3-4 students of a certain grade level. Class time was determined by both the Aylus volunteer and their students in each group. Class was provided via Zoom. In order to prepare the curriculum, volunteers had to search through textbooks or create their own material. Some materials include books such as Singapore Intensive Math for grades 2-6. Along with the in-class material, volunteers also had to create and grade homework for each student, which required one to two outside hours from the volunteers. In total, there were 10 weeks of teaching, with each week consisting of a one-hour class and a one-hour for volunteers to prepare class and grade homework.
After 10 weeks tutoring, students’ math skill were improved to a new level, their parents expressed their appreciation by leaving many kind words to volunteers, and even requested the tutoring program to extend to normal school year. All the volunteers were greatly encouraged by their positive impact to local community.
