On August 29th, AYLUS Pearland organized an online gathering before the Fall school semester started. The participants were all TAs who taught the summer programs, TAs for Hello Wuhan program, volunteers who participated in other AYLUS Pearland activities in 2020, and donors to the several fundraising events hosted by AYLUS Pearland.
On August 8th, AYLUS officers, Andy Gu, Andy Jiang, Kate Liu, Jayden Lu, Thomas Liang, and Aaron Wu had a meeting with parent advisors to plan the event. Officers and board members reached out to Pearland Chinese Association for sponsoring the gifts for the event. Rise and Shine Project generously provided the funding for goodie bag snacks.
Days before the event, officer Thomas Liang prepared a list of guests for the event and posted the list on WeChat for everyone to sign up. Andy Jiang and Aila Jiang purchased various popular snacks and packed them into 80 goodie bags. Then Thomas Liang, Andy Jiang, Jayden Lu, Andy Gu and Kate Liu distributed and delivered the goodie bags to all the guests who signed up.
On August 29th, the event started at 4pm online. First, AYLUS Pearland president, Andy Gu, gave a summary of the online teaching programs which involved 30 TAs and 150+ students. This was AYLUS Pearland’s first attempt to offer online teaching programs. Then the lead TAs, Bryan Li for GT Math, Jayden Lu for General Math, Andy Jiang for Reading, Julia Wu for Dancing, Kate Liu for Art, gave the participants an overview of what their classes have accomplished. At the end, Andy Gu introduced the on-going projects. Some included: making/selling cloth masks to raise fund for nursing homes, making cloth masks for schools, food drive to support the Pearland Neighborhood Center, PPE drive for PISD. He announced that fifteen AYLUS Pearland members won this year’s President Volunteer Service Award. Gold medalist, Steven Mao, displayed his medal and certificate to everyone at the meeting. AYLUS officers encouraged the members to continue support AYLUS Pearland’s projects and to brainstorm new community service ideas. After all the serious discussion, the participants started playing video games collaboratively, enjoying the snacks in their goodie bags, and having a good time together. They were ready for an exciting school year to start.
