On 11/22/2020, six members of the Syosset AYLUS (Leo Cheng, John Thach, Ryan Leung and Alan Huang, Emily Lin, Jasmine Chen) taught a ninety-minute English class to multiple newly immigrated high school students with varying degrees of proficiency in English.
The lesson consisted of three parts: Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Since Thanksgiving is a few days away, reading tutors Emily Lin and Leo Cheng made a Thanksgiving Webquest. At the start of class, they analyzed a turkey joke. Afterward, the students started the Webquest. Once the students finished the Webquest. The students shared the document with the tutors.
Student tutors Jasmine Chen and John Thach taught the writing portion of AYLUS Syosset’s 15th online ESL Tutoring class. In this class, the tutors reviewed the lessons they’d gone over in the past five weeks as a quick break before Thanksgiving. Then, students were given a variety of ambiguous photos and asked to create their own stories and settings based on them. Lastly, students were also led through a number of review vocabulary lists from the past few weeks. The class was instructed in English to immerse the students in an English environment.
Today in class we showed the students videos and then had them answer questions about the video to show comprehension. One video was in chinese with English subtitles about a man who saved the world and accidentally ended it, the other video was about the tale of a man who had to save a princess with a narrator that made the knight do whatever he spoke(which were mostly bad things).
The following 4 students volunteered in today’s tutoring program: John Thach(1.5 hours), Leo Cheng (1.5 hours), Alan Huang(1.5 hours) and Ryan Leung (1.5 hours) Jasmine Chen(1.5 hours), Emily Lin(1.5 hours).
