This summer, the AYLUS Pearland Branch began teaching their dance classes virtually through
Zoom. Each class was an hour long and one class was held per week. Four volunteers served the
community by scheduling class, choreographing dances, choosing songs, teaching class, recording
practice videos, and communicating with parents. In each class, the volunteers started off with a stretch and review then gradually moved to teaching the main dance. Occasionally, we would split the students into breakout rooms based on their ability to learn the choreography to ensure that everyone’s needs were met. Within the past lessons, students were able to learn dances to songs like Classic by MTKO and Wings by Little Mix.
In addition to teaching classes, volunteers were committed to motivate students to show facial
expressions and to have fun. Our goal was to introduce the art of dancing to children and to bring joy to students through dance. The volunteers worked hard to encompass all the different styles and levels of dance within our students.
The teacher volunteers were: Julia Wu, Cordelia Li, Emily She, and Joyce Zhang.
