As of March 23rd, there have been 232 confirmed cases and one confirmed death due to coronavirus in San Diego County. As the test kits become more widely available, it is expected that confirmed cases will continue to rise as well. However, San Diego Hospitals are already experiencing shortages on certain protective equipments as it takes a few weeks for federal equipment to arrive. During this time, many medical personnel on the front lines would be exposed to significant risk of infection due to lack of protective gears.
In response to the situation, AYLUS GPA announced the arrangement for volunteer parents to purchase 10,000 FDA-approved KN95 face masks on March 23rd. After the arrival of these masks by the weekend, AYLUS branches can order and distribute for their local communities accordingly.
The San Diego Branch immediately contacted two local hospitals within San Diego County to confirm mask shortages, and subsequently ordered 1,000 KN95 masks from AYLUS GPA. Given the urgency of the matter, the Branch president’s family, including Chengda Li & Chengming Li’s parents, prepaid $2,000 to the manufacturer in order to expedite the shipment to hospitals for the protection of nurses and doctors who are vital to saving lives.
On March 24th, AYLUS San Diego Branch launched a fundraiser for the donation of KN95 masks to the local hospital Kaiser Permanente / Palomar medical center, which is already treating confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Within just 33 hours, donations reached ~$2,000!! Below volunteers and their families not only participated in the Wuhan fundraiser in the first half of combat against coronavirus, but also participated in the San Diego fundraiser in the second half:
