On September 28th, 2019, students from the San Diego Branch of AYLUS participated and volunteered in Walk to End Alzheimer’s event hosted in Escondido, California. This charity event is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. All proceeds generated by these events go to Alzheimer’s Association, which is a nonprofit association that aims to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research.
At 8:30 AM on the 28th, AYLUS San Diego volunteers arrived at Kit Carson Park under heavy rain to participate in this event. Wearing white volunteer shirts and homemade purple ribbons, these volunteers stood just past the halfway point on the two mile walk and cheered the walkers on. The walkers were all holding flowers and wearing wristbands that displayed their connection to the terrible disease. During this three hour event, the group met countless caring and supportive walkers, many who have lost a family member or a close friend to the disease. People of all ages, from infants who were pushing around in strollers to elderly men and women, came together and participated in this event. There was the determination to end Alzheimer’s once and for all in everyone’s eyes. One particularly memorable moment of this event was when the volunteers met with an elderly woman who was suffering from Alzheimer’s and has been fighting the disease by participating in these walks for over 18 years now. Despite clapping until their hands were red and cheering until their throats were dry, the volunteers were very glad to be supporting such a dedicated and determined group.
