AYLUS Columbus Branch volunteers contributed to the success of the 2019 Ohio Chinese Festival on February the 2nd. Chinese New Year is perhaps the grandest celebration of the year for China. Offering a variety of events and activities, the Ohio Chinese Festival hopes to share the excitement of the Year of the Pig with those in Ohio. Hundreds of families, of many different ethnicities, came to experience the exhilarating celebration.
The festival included ongoing performances on the stage; children and adults alike danced to traditional Chinese music in extravagant brightly colored costumes. Taekwondo groups performed passionately, reflecting the fighting spirit of China. A plethora of activities were offered to those who visited, including face painting, arts and crafts, as well as many games.
Founding member Aidan Li helped set up the event prior to opening in the early morning. Misha Lee, Angelika-Lili Susanto, and Erica Shen brought smiles to dozens of children at the face painting station. The paintings ranged from dragons to flowers to anything imaginable. Amy Xuan and Brenna Li helped children create souvenirs such as little pigs or lanterns at the arts and crafts table. Dustin He, Patrick Wang and Eileen Liang made sure that everyone had a fun, unforgettable time playing games. Children earned tokens for completing games and could later exchange them for prizes. 1 token prizes consisted of inflatable balls, necklaces, and the like; while 30 token prizes could earn whole train sets. It was a truly wonderful experience seeing so many different people enjoy one festival. Everyone who visited left with pleasant memories that each volunteer selflessly worked to ensure.
